TRACES - Tracing Human and Climate impacts in South Africa

TRACES deals with interdisciplinary investigations of the combined effects of climate change and anthropogenic impacts on aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems in eastern South Africa over the last 250 years. Existing data sets are completed by and compared with new information gained from estuary and terrestrial sediment archives.

The TRACES network

The hands-on Training School on Methods in Applied Earth- and Aquatic Sciences (TRAIN-ME) focuses on basic field methods to get representative and reproducible field data. Experience in field methods is elemental for any further scientific approach. The first order of errors is introduced with sampling. Sophisticated lab-methods and statistical analyses should only be applied on first-class field samples. During the course we demonstrate simple and inexpensive methods (e.g., manual echo sounder, universal indicator paper, Secchi Disk etc.) and we train students to use heavy sample techniques and field analyses (e.g., vibro corer, underwater drone, spectrophotometer). All in all we encourage students and professionals to design their own field data collection and to gain 1st class material and to test their research hypotheses in geosciences or aquaticecology.
